the club where "VJ" was born.
A video artist was invited to show her work in a trendsetting nightclub. She invented the job of video jockey to develope the media ambiance for her debut. The idea caught on like wildfire.

Each night Merrill improvised live video mixes to the DJ's music, projected the live band performances and recorded them for posterity in superb studio quality stereo. She called herself the video jockey, or VJ. Her public experiment soon spread to all the hotspots in town including The Peppermint Lounge, Danceteria, Mudd Club, the Ritz, and MTV itself.

The first episode of the VJ DIARY will include performances by Gang of Four, the Mekons, ESG, Liquid Liquid, Bush Tetras, Suicide, Material, Del Byzanteens, Magazine, Bunnydrums, Pylon, NNB, and more.
Over 100 groundbreaking groups from around the world shared the stage.

Combining new hi def wide screen interviews and animation with the historical footage, legendary artists such as JIM JARMUSCH, ALAN VEGA, TYMON DOGG and BILL LASWELL participate in describing first hand what they experienced then and now, a time capsule to show the timeless arc of great talents. The series will expose this rich vein of independent music to a new public as well as the initiates who have faithfully followed from its inception.
