Kathryn
Karwat has
a style of painting that is sculptural as well as pictorial. She builds a
carapace of paint, composed of stratums of evolving color. I was privileged
to watch her paint during our college years. It was fascinating to watch these
images evolve, it seemed they had a life of their own.
The
exposure to her creative process had an influence on
me that I sometimes reflect upon when building up a density of image and
movement in my films, animations, or web pages. The editing stage of "Seismic Riffs" was an intense process of building layers of impressions and then chiseling away veneers of sound and picture to let the organic, emotional roots push through the surface of the moment.
Kathryn's style has evolved and streamlined over the years, as seen in the short videos of her current gouache painting series.
